96rock - rest in peace, my friend

i got the news late last night that 96rock was flipping formats this morning. thirty two years of rock heritage, gone in yet another asinine and incompetent evil empire decision. while i will always consider the actual date of death to be august 1997, when chris rude was fired, that lifeless thing that i grew up with managed to cling to life for another 9 years.

this news caught me unexpectantly in the gut. and then, i was relieved. why should some sham of a station continue on, run by nincompoops who don't understand atlanta or rock and roll, using the name of the formerly great station that i loved? they shouldn't. they managed to finally pull the plug. thank god no florida governors or useless fuckwit presidents stepped in to prolong the suffering.

but with this loss i am sad. memories came flooding back. my internship with deborah. the halloween ball when my mustang died and willard let me pretend to be mrs willard to use his aaa card. the lunch with mr bill and nick and jeff where mr bill did his george michael "faith" video impression. oh and then he offered me the continuity job.

escaping psycho michael by taking a 3 month old fizz into the station on a saturday, and having kaedy invite us both on a tour bus to greenville to see 38 special. running into skot at the hoodoo gurus concert at the fox because fisher gave me 3 pairs of tickets, and for the first and last time i was attempting to sell the extra pairs. watching days in the conference room with gloria and jan. the sar and i proudly accepting our first redi-wip awards for our exploits at the tower place hotel, thanks to margaritas at panchos with the big guy. john boy playing "jessica." visiting beth in stone mountain before her surgery, and having her later steal that memo out of my not-so-permanent file.

the christmas party where dan patrick and the roth both wore black turtlenecks. riding in shamu. maple's "sloppy butt faced drunk" spot. driving in the station van for the knights turner cup parade. watching ayo steal the pee pickles. lenny kravitz pushing me into the jock lounge and then kissing me on the lips. running with the wake up crew and playing kevin zeppelin's beard at tom glavine's house. the blues brothers soundcheck at the house of blues on the eve of the 96 olympics, overlooking the magical, twinkling centennial park the night before the bomb.

liz, cooper, bush, greg clarkson, taylor, laura, the kath, kool moe dee, mattman, andi, greathouse, both bladerunners, brad, the first and best christy anderson, mikey, maria, rickman, adam, gina, kurt, darcy, and my pesky older brother michael hughes.

oh and the music. i gave them my youth, happily. 96rock will always rock in my memories.

I wanted your job so badly! Hooray for memories so good you have to reference them in code (to protect your >ahem< innocence, I assume)! Death to Corporate Radio!
