tears
its been a week of tears and its only wednesday.
monday night i watched my red wings win the western conference finals in person. since i've cried for every playoff victory for the last 15 years or so, it wasn't surprising that i'd cry when i got to see the winners and losers handshake line and the campbell trophy presentation in person.
tuesday, i watched the season finale of house, (massive spoiler alert -- and lack of spoiler warnings should be a felony) after finding out a friend of my friend has a really bad type of leukemia, and the former gm of 96rock had unexpectedly died during surgery. ok so i didn't need any reminders of mortality to sob during house. it was literally heartbreaking to watch wilson lose the love of his life. and to see house think it would be better to die than to live with the responsibility of killing his best friend's girlfriend. oh.
today, still reeling from news of a tornado hitting my friend's neighborhood in georgia, i went outside to feed lotto. thinking that pooh and fee were eating poop (bad dogs!) in the backyard, i yelled halfheartedly for them to stop, and continued to walk around the pasture. only to discover that the dogs weren't eating tasty brown dog nuggets, but instead were eating my wild bunny friend's babies. i was, and am, positively horrified. i screamed like a banshee when i discovered their tiny bodies. i knew the bunny was hanging around but had no idea the tall grass in the dog's yard made an ideal birthing den for rabbits. stupid rabbit. ultimately i blame myself for allowing an attractive habitat to grow in the yard, and for not pursuing the dogs nasty habit with more vigor. the bunny massacre will not leave my mind anytime soon.

the horse and the hare
when i first got my rabbits (#2 crazy unemployed thing to do) last year, they were small but i didn't realise they could squeeze through my chain link fence into the pasture until they had squeezed through the fence and escaped into the pasture. as i ran after cadbury, trying to keep him from running through the other fence to my neighbor's yard, peep was left to fend for himself. and my horse lotto (#1 crazy unemployed thing to do) came over. i watched in slow motion horror, expecting lotto to stomp on the pretty little bunny with his massive hooves. but amazingly, lotto lowered his head to the ground and gently put his nose on peep. not sure if he was actually holding him or had just terrified the poor bunny, but he held him until i could get over and catch him.
so it's not a great surprise that suddenly this week, a wild bunny has begun hanging out in lotto's barn. everytime i go out to feed the horse, i find the bunny in there too, eating lotto's crumbs. i put a small bowl of rabbit food and hay down, but so far, it hasn't been touched.
i suspect the bunny is either deaf or brain damaged, because he doesn't seem frightened of me, and he won't run off until i'm practically close enough to pet him. but he sure is cute. and lotto apparently enjoys having him around, too.
oh well. what's another mouth to feed.

i watch entirely too much television

eli stone was renewed. yay!

new amsterdam was cancelled. boo!

reaper was renewed. yay!!

moonlight was cancelled. double boo!! what exactly are the folks at cbs thinking? maybe a sequel to murder, she wrote?
and remember, as this might be my last season watching american idol, make it all turn out ok! vote for david cook! i was happy to get my "make me cry" moment when he sang "the first time ever i saw your face" tonight. and producers, just say no to randy as a judge next season. he's lost what little credibility he had with his "molten hot" comments about lukewarm bathwater david archuletta. the vacant look in his eyes as he sang "longer" said it ALL.

this puppy needs a home! 817.743.4516
oh. and tomorrow night? i just might get to see this guy cry. go red wings!!!

shoot! or, shout!!
shoot!

x men in trees was cancelled. sweet, funny, well-written and well-acted shows about people who aren't already in bodybags just don't stand a chance. damn you, abc!
x my favorite supervisor at work is getting sent back to the "war" in the middle east. if i didn't despise the president and his henchmen before, i really do now. wait, i DID despise them all before. godspeed, mr. pearson!

x my dreaded boy jason castro got the boot.
x speaking of american idol, i've decided it is rigged -- and i hereby demand an independent accounting firm to verify the votes starting next season. price waterhouse seems to have some time off between the oscars and the emmys.
x i hate it that peta usually gives animal welfare advocates a bad name.
shout!!
a i got a $130 wool peacoat at the cabela's tent sale for $1.75! c'mon, fall!
a i finally figured out how to link two songs to play back to back in itunes. for instance, van halen's "eruption" and "you really got me," or led zeppelin's "heartbreaker" and "living loving maid." only took me four years!
a the bachelor is one of my guilty pleasures. i don't watch every season, only when the guy is cute and funny, and not the seasons with the useless, smarmy cads. but this season's british bachelor has been delightful. who will he pick? why, lorenzo lamas' act-tress daughter, of course!

a speaking of guilty pleasures, i got a usb turntable for my birthday. can i say how fantastic it is to have my vinyl collection now available on my ipod? boston's third stages album, bourgeois tagg's "i don't mind at all," 4 out of 5 doctors, hunters & collectors, whoo hoo i'm totally excited.

a alex o'loughlin was named one of tv guide's sexiest men on tv. name him best guy with brown hair who wears pants if the photo shoot yields a photo like this!

i guess i didn't get the memo

i'm a pretty big american idol fan. or maybe i should say, follower. fan implies that i really like it, which i can't always say. sometimes i hate the contestants. sometimes i hate the judges. other times i hate the musical mentors and the song selections.
this season, after my darling michael johns was spirited away too early, i refocused my idolocity on david cook. and he hasn't disappointed. tonight he sang "baba o'riley" and did it justice while putting his own spin on it. big vocal moments, rock cred, a terrific outing.
too bad the judges already got the producer-driven "have cows over tinky winky -- er, david archuleta" memo. no matter how bland the eye-closing, lip-licking, inappropriately-bouncing teen is, i've come to count on randy spewing bullshit praise on archie. he'll hack all other contestants to bits, deserved or not. simon also drank the kool aid, but his judging fix is done more subtley. no one listens to paula. little david blows a sentence during andrew lloyd webber week?? the camera pulls out to an audience shot and the judges don't even mention the faux pas. brooke or jason bungle a lyric, and the firing squad is called out. archie is technically proficient, but shows no spark of life. he's clueless about lyrics and meaning, and has a complete inability to excite with a performance. he's robotic. there's no feeling.
has archuleta had a big idol moment? one that inspires goose bumps, like clay aiken's "bridge over troubled water" or fantasia's "summertime?" no. but you'd never know it by listening to the judges. it could just be his age, maybe with some miles on him, he'll bring the passion. but i doubt it.
i worry about saddling david cook with the title of american idol. but please, dear readers. all three of you. vote for whoever isn't david archuleta.

all the pretty horses
i started watching the triple crown races when i was about 8 or 9. i had read a series of "a girl and her horse" books based in racing and, of course, already loved horses. at that time, seattle slew and affirmed both won the triple crown. it seemed really tough, but attainable, by very special horses. of course no one has won it since.

in 2006, i was certain that barbaro would win all three races. i had seen his trainer win a silver medal at the olympics in atlanta. he was good horse people. and gorgeous barbaro cruised to victory in the kentucky derby. but then i watched, horrified, as his jockey pulled him up during the preakness, after he broke a leg. i was so happy when his owners tried to nurse him back to health. i even sent him a get well card. (well, to be honest, i sent the card from my dog zamboni, who has survived a few surgeries of his own.) such a fighter, it seemed he'd survive, against all odds. but months later he took a bad turn and they put him down. i was devastated.
but i still watched. after the kentucky derby yesterday, i'm not sure if i can watch anymore. the beautiful filly eight belles competed against 19 colts, and finished second to triple crown capable big brown. and then collapsed on the track after breaking both her front legs. big brown got the blanket of roses in the winner's circle, and eight belles got an injection. they euthanized her on the track, right where she fell. no hopes for a barbaro-type miracle for her.

the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat. the beautiful filly beat 18 boys, and i can't stop crying about her.
