texas is a great state.
for me to poop on!! (thanks, triumph.)
my first distinct memories of texas were when i moved to washington, dc. i quickly became a redskins fan, and thus i despised everything having to do with texas, especially dallas, because of the redskins huge rivalry with the cowboys. when my brother and sister in law moved to texas in the early 90s and i was able to spend some time here, my feelings never changed. big, flat, and boring. the texans had some sort of irrational state pride in their big, flat, boring state. these egos were based in fantasy. the people spoke with southern accents, but had none of the southern charm or manners of the real south.
when it was time to move from north carolina, my brother said, come to texas. it'll will be good to have family here, you can be a part of my kid's lives, and i'll give you a job if you can't find another one. so, i moved here. family time was nice, my brother is a fantastic cook and i enjoyed spending time with his wife and kids. and there was another perk for me in texas, land prices are pretty cheap and i was able to afford a little bit of land so i could finally have my dream of a horse in my back yard.
but the rest of the state continued to suck. houses built close enough together that you can stand between two, with your arms outstretched, and touch both buildings, sprung up over every available square foot of former pasture land. i worked for my brother, where i learned from all my texan native co-workers, that literally none of them had ever left the state. not even a driving trip across the state border to go to new orleans. ah, i finally understood. this texas pride came from the fact that these people didn't know any better! look at george w. he never travelled outside the country until he was president. nuff said.
i eventually got another job in radio, something i never in a million years expected, but the job was literally tailor-made for me and my musical knowledge and tastes. unfortunately, the job was in dallas and my commute was torture, and my pervy psycho-boss was a nightmare. and since then, almost two years ago, my career has suffered. no, my career has stopped, and a series of bizarre, low-paying, soul-sucking jobs have followed.
it's time to admit, this place isn't working for me. so. there it is.
