the horse and the hare

when i first got my rabbits (#2 crazy unemployed thing to do) last year, they were small but i didn't realise they could squeeze through my chain link fence into the pasture until they had squeezed through the fence and escaped into the pasture. as i ran after cadbury, trying to keep him from running through the other fence to my neighbor's yard, peep was left to fend for himself. and my horse lotto (#1 crazy unemployed thing to do) came over. i watched in slow motion horror, expecting lotto to stomp on the pretty little bunny with his massive hooves. but amazingly, lotto lowered his head to the ground and gently put his nose on peep. not sure if he was actually holding him or had just terrified the poor bunny, but he held him until i could get over and catch him.

so it's not a great surprise that suddenly this week, a wild bunny has begun hanging out in lotto's barn. everytime i go out to feed the horse, i find the bunny in there too, eating lotto's crumbs. i put a small bowl of rabbit food and hay down, but so far, it hasn't been touched.

i suspect the bunny is either deaf or brain damaged, because he doesn't seem frightened of me, and he won't run off until i'm practically close enough to pet him. but he sure is cute. and lotto apparently enjoys having him around, too.

oh well. what's another mouth to feed.
