pop culture becomes me

when it snowed here last weekend, my old friend alan posted this pee wee herman video clip on facebook, and it hit me: oh! that's why i always say "it's snowing! it's snowing!"

pop culture has completely infiltrated my life. but usually i realise what the source material is when i'm quoting something. like "i can remember lots of things" or "that's why they call them crushes, if they were easy, they'd call them something else" from sixteen candles, or "that's when i rearrange my sock drawer" from the sure thing. or "we need to talk about your tps reports" from office space, "i got better" from monty python and the holy grail, or "you must be good and tired. - nah, just tired" from starstruck. or "it's all fun and games until one of you gets my foot up your ass" from veronica mars.

when i was first met a.s., we were talking in my office about getting to know each other better, and i made a little hand motion with my left hand. which as it turns out is from the brass monkey bookend on wonderfalls (at 6:10 of the clip).

and i actually have one of my favorite catch phrases wrong -- at 1:55 in this clip, fletch says "as far as you know," not "not as far as you know." whoops!

one of my favorite retorts comes from dogbert. "bah."

what bits of pop culture have crept into your life? are any of them so deeply rooted that you're surprised when you remember where they came from?

That's easy "In Haiti" as said by Chevy Chase in Caddyshack.

chevy is totally quotable, but i don't remember that one. i guess we'll have to watch it again this weekend!

this happened to me just the other day-i heard a song and realized it's where something i say a lot came from. i can almost remember what it was, but not quite. i was surprised. now it's going to drive me crazy.

i do remember the source of many of the things i say. speaking of chevy, "it looks good on you, though." and also from caddyshack, one of my faves, "you'll get nothing and like it."

i say this to my cats a lot: "you're going to drive me to drinkin' in my hot rod lincoln."

and rather appropos for this week, there's something from a local news commercial from at least ten years ago that dan and say, "ga power trucks on are on their way." now we say it for about anything that's on its way.

and here i thought i came up with "you'll get nothing and like it"!!! i knew i should've mentioned song lyrics, but none of them came to mind at the time. but now you must remember the song you quote a lot.

i was reminded of another major one -- it's from an old life in hell cartoon, i think i have it somewhere, but it's "seethe in silent resentment." very useful.
