general hospital was huge when i was in junior high school. it was difficult to watch as i was bussed about 15 miles away and i didn't get home from school til it was almost over. in high school, when gh hired rick springfield (remember when your limo ran over my friend daphne's foot in the parking lot at tyson's corner, rick?), john stamos, and jack wagner, it was easier to catch because i got home from school much earlier --when i didn't have an after-school activity.
luke and laura got remarried again today, 25 years after their first wedding. which i don't even remember seeing. it was difficult to watch consistently, because as rosie o'donnell reminded me on the view, we didn't have vcrs then. twenty five years and technologically, the world is completely and insanely different. rosie talked about teaching her grandmother to press "play" and "record" at the same time on her portable tape recorder to tape gh. with no grandmother to train, i had to do all my recording myself. i still have audio tapes of the 1976 montreal olympics. i just had to save that for posterity. now, i save all those special video moments first on my tivo, then on my dvd recorder.
i remember experiencing my first earthquake, not because i felt the earth move, but because the needle jumped on my turntable.
i got my first walkman my junior year. it was adorable, the size of a cassette tape box, and i made mix tapes for it, and my bitchin car stereo, all the time. now, my ipod is just about the same size, and it also plays video that i recorded on my digital camera. we never even had a video camera when i was growing up. which is in some ways a good thing, no moving images to be humiliated by for all eternity, but it's also a little sad that certain things weren't captured for all eternity.
i think we got our first vcr my senior year. betamax, of course -- better to have the best technology (that will be obsolete in 7 years) than hang with the common people.
it's amazing how things were "when i was a little girl." and i still FEEL like a little girl now! will i still feel this way when i'm 65 and we're finally flying around with individual flightpacks? i stopped watching gh in high school, but i've stuck with as the world turns, for better or worse, since junior high. tivo records all those episodes without blinking. ah tivo. how i love you.

Surely I've told you that I have my original VCR tape from Luke & Laura's first wedding. The entire episode, and the one from the day before. I got it out last week with the intention of copying it to DVD. Will send you a copy.
I also got home too late to see it-3:50 if I was really lucky, but usually 3:55, when it was ending. The kids in my neighborhood come strolling off the bus at 2:15 now. What's up with that?
Becky
high school ended at 1:50 for me. which was great -- except that meant it STARTED at like 7am!!! ack!
I just never got the attraction of Luke. That manfro was NOT sexy! But hysterical about Daphne's foot under the limo.
actually, i was recording "friday night videos" because i didn't get mtv until my last year in college!! but i do remember watching "rock and roll high school" at YOUR house -- on vhs!! :)
