on paper, i'm on the fence about the new television season. at least as far as the new shows go, there's only one that i'm looking forward to and know i'm going to adore (pushing daisies) and it's getting so much critical attention, i'm convinced it will be cancelled after less than 4 episodes like lee pace's wonderfalls before it. but it turns out there are a few decent shows. unfortunately, it doesn't seem that private practice will be one of them. i like the addison character and love anything tim daly does, and a shirtless piz from veronica mars? ooooh baby. but the pilot was pretty much a mess and if things don't pick up pretty quickly, it will be "delete season pass" city. of course, last season abc allowed brothers and sisters to grow and improve, and it really succeeded. so maybe that's possible for private practice too. let's hope shonda isn't stretched too thin to pull it off.
two shows i wasn't really interested in when i heard about them were chuck and reaper. both are based around slacker dudes and their best buds working in megastores who have outside influences totally shake up their lives. chuck gets government secrets downloaded into his brain and must work with the nsa and cia -- he looks a little like jimmy fallon and his cia buddy looks like carrie underwood. and sam in reaper finds out on his 21st birthday that his parents sold his soul to the devil, and now he must do the devil's bidding, which could be really bad but actually just involves capturing escaped souls from hell -- he looks a little like the guy from joe millionaire and his girl interest looks just like hilary swank. amazingly enough, both shows are really funny, fun, and compelling.
the show i really want to like (but fear for the most) is moonlight, what with the vampire theme, hunky australian lead and my darling jason dohring (also from veronica mars), it has potential. unfortunately, the pilot was a mess, the romantic interest is really weak, and i can see it cancelled before it gets going.
i was a little interested in dirty sexy money due to peter krause's presence, however i haven't been interested enough to watch more than the first 15 minutes, so that's probably not a good thing.
but the best thing about the new tv season is the return of the best show on tv: friday night lights. and one of the most charming and romantic, men in trees. and snarky house. and fun ugly betty. greys anatomy needs to step it up to keep me.
and i can always count on bbcamerica for great tv -- coupling, hex, this life -- right now, it's torchwood.
and a special shout out to saturday night live, who had a half decent season premiere with a couple of great adam samberg sketches, including another hysterical digital short. hey lorne -- get seth out from the writer's room and back before the camera again!
